COURSE DESCRIPTION

This skill set reflects the skill requirements to provide support a person to self-administer medication. This skill set has been endorsed by industry as suitable for individuals who hold a qualification at Certificate III level or higher in an area involving provision of direct client care or support. Covering topics including basic anatomy and physiology, physical assistance skills and techniques and incident reporting and standard documentation, participants will need to complete two (2) units of competency, detailed below.

DELIVERY MODE & DURATION

Delivery Mode: Blended (online learning and assessment + workplace training and assessment)
Course Duration: 8 weeks, (4-weeks per Unit of Competency x 2)
Approximate Hours*: 53 hours (45 online +8 in the workplace)
Estimated Full Time Study Load: 6.6 Hrs per week (53 hrs./8 weeks)

* Applicants that have previous skills or knowledge in either Unit of Competency, or who achieve Recognition for previous work or study will complete the course within the approximate timeframe.

The payment of course tuition fees are  $300 up-front, then $300 dollars of the commencement of Unit 2.

UNITS OF COMPETENCY

This Skill Set is made up of 2 Units Of Competency:

  1.  HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work with basic information about the human body and to recognise and promote ways to maintain healthy functioning of the body. This unit applies to any worker who needs to use and interpret information that includes references to client anatomy and physiology.
  2. HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication
    This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and provide medication assistance, and complete medication documentation. It also involves supporting a client to self-administer medication.
WHO IS THIS COURSE DESIGNED FOR

Persons who:

  • Hold a qualification at Certificate III level or higher in an area involving provision of direct client care or support, and/or
  • Are currently working in various care and support roles in the community services industry who wish to develop skills in supporting people to self-administer medication.

 

The Course is designed to allow for the practical training and assessment components of the Course to be conducted in conjunction with on-the-job activities on actual clients/residents of the workplace, under the direct supervision of a Trainer/Assessor, or an Enrolled Nurse or Registered Nurse who will act as a third-party observer under the supervision of the Trainer/Assessor.

COURSE ENTRY AND EQUIPMENT REQUIREMENTS

Employment

All applicants into this Skill Set must:

  • Be currently working in a Disability/Aged Care Support role where they directly assist people to take medication.
  • Have access to an Enrolled Nurse or a Registered Nurse to act as a third-party observer for the practical assessment activities.
  • Work with the Academy and an organisation to obtain a Workplace Training Agreement (WTA). Refer to the Workplace Training Agreement section below.

Academic

There are no pre-requisite or any general academic entry requirements to either Unit Of Competency.

Personal

All applicants into this course will need:

  • Access to stable broadband internet.
  • Access to a personal computer or tablet-style device with web-browser software, Gmail or similar email platform, and other general office software such as; Word and PDF reader.
  • Scanned colour image of your own Government-issued photo-ID, an active personal email address and an active (mobile) phone number.
  • A valid Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you don’t have a USI you can create one here www.usi.gov.au.
  • Access to a printer/scanner
  • To undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment.
TRAINING AND ASSESSMENT

The planned duration of training and assessment for this Course is 53 hours over 8 weeks. This is achieved by a combination of self-paced study, watching training videos, receiving scheduled training calls, preparing and submitting online assessment tasks, and practical skills training and assessment in the workplace. Once enrolled in the course, each participant will be emailed login details to the Learning Management System (LMS). The LMS contains all learning and assessment resources for this Course: 

  • Self-paced study – is time spent reading and engaging with the on-screen and downloadable Learner Guides, and completing the learning activities within the Learner Guides.
  • Watching training videos – we have provided in this Course 7 training videos from the Altura Learning catalogue of professional development training resources. The total viewing hours are 170 minutes or just under 3 hours. Included with each Video are a range of non-assessable Self-Extension questions and activities which should take approximately 30-35 minutes to complete.
  • Online Assessment tasks – Both Units of Competency in this Skill Set contain a range of multiple-choice and short-answer written knowledge questions, and a range of short-medium response research activities. These assessments are submitted electronically in the LMS.
  • Workplace training and assessment – For the HLTHPS006 Assist Clients with Medication unit each Participant is required to provide assistance with medication: to at least 5 different clients according to their care plans; with at least 5 different types of medications; using at least 3 different modes of administration. These activities may occur in conjunction with the Workplacement activities, or they may not as the clients care plan and availability will dictate if this can occur. Evidence collected in these assessment tasks and activities are also submitted into the LMS.

WORKPLACE TRAINING AGREEMENT

 Participants in the Course are required to participate in a minimum of 8 hours of Workplacement or paid employment in a suitable organisation such as an: Aged Care facility; Home Care provider; Disability provider; Group Home. The onus is upon applicants into this course to organise their own access to a suitable workplace for the purposes of practical training and assessment, and are expected to nominate their current place of employment, only if it is an appropriate facility.

A suitable organisation will a service that contains the following:

  • Access to an Enrolled Nurse or a Registered Nurse for on-the-job supervision and collection of evidence• Medication, placebo medication, administration equipment, charts and documentation,
  • Access to at least 5 different clients and their individualised plans,
  • Workplace policies and procedures
  • A safe and secure environment

Applicants must download and complete the Workplace Training Agreement application form before proceeding to enrol in this Course. Without a suitable Workplace applicants are unable to enrol in this Course. Applicants should submit the completed form with their other documents when submitting the online enrolment form.

Each Participant will commence their Workplacement training as soon as possible after the Course commencement. Prior to commencing Workplacement, Participants will be provided access to a Workplace/Placement Workbook, which must be completed during each shift in the Workplace. The Workplace/Placement Workbook incorporates the following ‘on the job’ components:

  • Part 1: Reflective Journal and Logbook
  • Part 2: Third Party Report

TRAINING VIDEOS PROVIDED

The 7 training videos in this course are not provided as the Participants primary source of learning information – they are provided as supplementary learning resources to the Learner Guide. Viewing these training videos will enable all Participants to obtain a broader context to the learning outcomes of each unit, and to the Aged and Community Care industry in general.

Each relevant training video resides in the LMS within the nominated unit and is selected based on the learning outcomes of each Video. Participants may access the videos from a module in the LMS, which is played in a web browser window. Participants cannot download the videos, but can view them on any device that has web browser software installed.

Pathways from the course

  • Academic – The two UOC in this Skill Set provide credit towards a range of qualifications in the CHC Community Services Training Package or HLT Health Training Package at Certificate IV and Diploma level, such as CHC43015 Certificate IV in Ageing Support.
  • Occupational Outcomes – Graduates of this program are ideally placed to gain or maintain employment in the Aged and Community Care industry in roles such as:
    • Personal Care Giver
    • Residential Care Worker
    • Care Assistant
RECOGNITION FOR PREVIOUS STUDY OR LEARNING

  • previous formal training, and/or
  • work experience, and/or
  • life experience

Recognition of prior learning 

Some applicants may already have some or all of the skills and knowledge covered in the 2 Units of Competency in this Skill Set. Participants may have:

  • Work experience in the Health or Community Services industry other related industries, and/or
  • Have successfully completed assessments in the HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems or the HLTHPS006 Assist clients with medication unit of competency, or a related unit of competency.

If applicants have a relevant qualification, or any documentation from previous related training, then they should present this to the Academy upon enrolment as proof of competence. Applicants may also have documentation of their past work experience. All of these documents should be presented as evidence for a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment.

Credit Transfer

Credit transfer is automatic recognition, not requiring applicants to go through the RPL process.  If you have completed courses from a Registered Training Organisation that delivers AQF qualifications or units of competency that are nationally accredited, then these courses or units will be automatically recognised by the Academy providing they are identical as those offered by the College. Units of competency with different codes or titles but which are equivalent to those offered by the Academy (as determined by the Training Package developer) may be recognised providing they have been completed within the last 5 years.

HOW DO I ENROL?
  1. Collate the following information and documentation:
    1. Unique Student Identifier (USI).
    2. Scanned colour photo of your Government-issued identification (Driver Licence or Passport)
    3. Completed Workplace Training Agreement application form (Where applicable)
  2. Pick your course start date directly on the upcoming classes schedule at the top or bottom of this page.
  3. Select the course name and then complete all mandatory sections on the form, and then upload your ID, Police Check and WTA Application Form (if required)
  4. Pay for the course – either by Credit Card or select to pay by Invoice

When we receive your completed enrolment form and supporting documentation we will:

  1. Call you to discuss your application and any missing or unclear information provided
  2. Validate your USI and personal information
  3. Contact the nominated organisation about the Workplace Training Agreement, and if suitable, establish a written agreement with them on your behalf. You will be required to also sign the agreement.
  4. Provide access to undertake an online Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment.

You will be enrolled into your selected Course once:

  1. Payment for tuition fees has been made;
  2. All of your information and identity has been validated
  3. You have completed the LLN assessment and have demonstrated the academic capacity to successfully undertake your chosen course
  4. Any required written WTA’s are signed by all parties
