HLTAID003 Provide First Aid


This unit of competency course provides training and assessment in the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to a casualty and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) Guidelines. This single-unit course applies to all workers who may be required to provide First Aid including CPR, in a range of situations, including community and workplace settings.

This course is what you need if you are a workplace first aid officer. It includes CPR training and standard first aid treatments, including use of an AED. This is the most popular course that the majority of our clients complete who require a regular first aid qualification.

This course is designed for organisations which require multiple employees to be trained and assessed in the provision of First Aid and CPR. Enrolling your employees in our course ensures that your first aid compliance needs are met and that your staff is motivated and well informed to provide First aid and CPR in a first aid emergency if the need should arise.

There are no pre-requisites for this course so it is perfect for people that have never completed any first aid training before or for workplace first aiders looking to update their first aid training. This course also includes training in Automated External Defibrillation.


All applicants into this course will need:

  • To undertake a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment, demonstrating at least a moderate level of English language proficiency.
  • Access to a personal computer or tablet-style device with stable broadband internet and general office software such as; Word and PDF reader.
  • Valid personal email address and mobile phone number.
  • The physical capability to perform CPR on a Manikin (dummy) for at least 2 minutes while kneeling on the floor.
  • To wear their normal work attire when undertaking the practical Workshop session.


All equipment used in the Workshop for practical training will be provided by the Academy. Such items are:

  • Adult and infant resuscitation manikins in line with ARC Guidelines for the purpose of assessment of CPR procedures
  • AED training device
  • Workplace incident report form

Approximately 12 hours, comprised of

  • 5 hours Online * – self-paced learning and assessments +
  • 7 hours Workshop – practical training and assessment, conducted at your workplace


* If this is a ‘refresher’ course for you, or if you have previous knowledge of First Aid or CPR you may complete the Online component within 5 hrs. 


There are no traditional classroom learning sessions or paper-based exams for this course:

  • Once you are enrolled in the course participants will be emailed login details to the Learning Management System.
  • All participants are required to successfully complete approximately 5 hours of pre-course theory online prior to attending the practical Workshop. The pre-course theory is made up of 4 learning sections with supplementary videos to broaden participants understanding of emergency situations
  • The assessment requirements are to complete 28 Multiple-Choice quiz questions and 21 Short-answer written questions.
  • All pre-course theory and assessments are provided and submitted online. Assessments will be graded by your trainer prior to the Workshop.

Note: All Participants must successfully complete the pre-course theory and assessments prior to attending the Workshop Practical Session.

  • During the Workshop participants will be provided with training and demonstrations in the correct provision of First Aid in a range of scenarios and CPR. Participants will then be required to satisfactorily complete a range of practical demonstration exercises, and will be assessed by their trainer in-person as they are performed.
  • The practical exercises will be completed as role-play scenarios in groups or pairs, and will involve placing participants in the recovery position. There are two tasks to this assessment:
    • Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) (5 cycles of both compressions and ventilations) on an adult and a child resuscitation manikin
    • Respond to two simulated first aid scenarios contextualised to the Participant’s workplace /community setting
    • Demonstrate the application of the appropriate first aid procedures for eight different scenarios including but not limited to: allergic reaction; bleeding control; fractures, sprains and strains; envenomation, using pressure immobilisation.



Participants into this course must agree to have some simulated procedures practiced on themselves by other participants. The trainer will attempt to pair the same gender for these scenarios however there may be times when participants are required to be paired with the opposite gender.


Participants assessed as being competent in all assessments will receive a Statement of Attainment certificate in HLTAID003 Provide First Aid.

  • We come to you – We send a trainer to your workplace/organisation to conduct a customised practical and assessment training session for your staff/students/personnel (minimum numbers apply) ;
  • Private booking in our venue – if you don’t have an adequate training facility, your staff can come to our training rooms to conduct a private customised session for your team (minimum numbers apply);


We will customise your practical session to meet your individual or industry needs, and cater for the range of learning styles found in groups.


Participants may already have some or all of the skills and knowledge covered in the  HLTAID003 Provide First Aid units of competency. Participants may have:

  • Work experience in the Health or Community Services industry other related industries, and/or
  • Have successfully completed assessments in HLTAID003 Provide First Aid units of competency, or a related unit of competency.

If Participants have a relevant qualification, or any documentation from previous related training, then they should present this to the Academy upon enrolment as proof of competence. Participants may also have documentation of their past work experience. All of these documents should be presented as evidence for a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) assessment.
